2004 Fire and Life Safety EducationVisits
The Fire and Life Safety Team visited people.
January 6, 2004 Kyle Livingston was working on his Eagle Scout project. He wanted to do some community service work. We went to Fairfield Assisted Living and installed some smoke detectors.
January 15, 2004 Quitman County Headstart brought 40 students and 6 teachers to station 3 for a tour. Fire and Life Safety Educator Rip Copeland went over smoke detectors and exiting a house safely. He then took them on a tour of the station.
January 16, 2004 South Panola Headstart brought to groups of students to station #3 for a station tour. Fire & Life Safety Educator James Snyder conducted the tour. He went over some basic fire safety, and then took them on a tour. There were 100 students done in two sessions.
February 15,2004 Children from the “Jesus Loves Me Too” daycare to station 1 for a tour. Fire and Life Safety Educator James Snyder took them on a tour of the station, and let them see the fire apparatus, the tools we use, with a brief description of uses. Seven (7) children and two (2) caregivers attended.
February 19, 2004 Fire & Life Safety Team members, James Snyder and Steve Whitworth, took the fire safety trailer to Senatobia, MS. They put 22 middle school students through the home escape plan.
February 21, 2004 Fire Safety Educator Rip Copeland carried “Pluggie the Fireplug” to the North Park Mall in Jackson, MS. He and Tommy Wardlaw, from the Mississippi Burn Camp Foundation, did a fire safety presentation for 75 children and adults.
April 5, 2004 Fire and Life Safety Educator Rip Copeland did a 30-minute fire extinguisher class for the employees at The Peoples Bank & Trust. There were 6 employees present.
April 27, 2004 Lt. L Lee Garner, Firefighter Jason Turner and Fire and Life Safety Educator Rip Copeland took L-10 to Batesville Headstart. There they went over L-10 and its equipment. There were 276 children present and 26 staff members.
May 01, 2004 Lt. David Tarver, Lt. Jason Slayton and Firefighter Cowles Horton accompanied Fire and Life Safety Educator James Snyder to Tri-Lakes Medical Center health day. They set up a booth including a video presentation on fire safety, and passed out brochures and coloring books. They also took “Pluggie” the Fireplug for a presentation. They made contact with 40 children and 30 adults. On the same date Fire and Life Safety Educators William Stewart, and Rip Copeland took the fire safety trailer to the ANSWERED PRAYER benefit. They also had a booth set up to distribute fire and life safety materials. They took 60 children and 25 adults through the trailer.
May 15, 2004 Fire and Life Safety Educators William Stewart, James Snyder, Rip Copeland, along with Firefighters Billy Whitworth, Jason Turner and Lt. L Lee Garner took the fire safety trailer to SpringFest. They did demonstrations of the trailers capabilities, and handed out 150 pieces of educational material.
May 15, 2004 Gave Panola Partnership 48 rulers, 159 frisbees and 190 pencils for bags they were preparing for the St. Jude bass classic.
May 22, 2004 Fire and Life Safety Educators William Stewart and Rip Copeland took the fire safety trailer to Shiloh M.B. Baptist Church. They were having Shiloh’s Youth in Action day. We saw 25 youth and 12 adults.
June 11, 2004 Lt. L Lee Garner, Firefighter Jason Turner and Fire and Life Safety Educator Rip Copeland went to Batesville Middle School, there they instructed students on severe weather safety. They ran 82 students, and six teachers in the fourth and fifth grade Quest program through the severe weather portion of the safety trailer. Related brochures were left for each class.
June 18, 2004 Lt. L Lee Garner, Firefighter Jason Turner and Fire and Life Safety Educator Rip Copeland went to Batesville Middle School, there they instructed students on fire safety. They ran 82 students, and six teachers in the fourth and fifth grade Quest program through the fire safety portion of the safety trailer. Related brochures were left for each class.
July 1, 2004 Fire and Life Safety Educators James Snyder and Rip Copeland carried the fire safety trailer to the MS Fire Academy. Instructor Don Kauss asked if we would bring it down for the 1035-I-II-III class as a resource. Captain Steve Whitworth was a student in the class and used it for a prop in his presentation.
July 8, 2004 Fire and Life Safety Educator Rip Copeland did a fire safety presentation at Mill Creek School. The students were shown a video entitled The Detector Protectors. After the video we reviewed the subject matter. There were 15 students and 5 teachers present.
July 12-16, 2004 The Batesville Fire Department held its first Fire Academy for Kids this week. Class started each morning at 8:00 a.m., and ended at noon. The day started off with physical fitness. Then we went over different fire safety subjects each day, except Wednesday we did first aid and c.p.r. After each lesson the Batesville Junior Auxiliary provide refreshments. We then did our hands on skills, reviewed homework then departed for the day. We had 50 students ages 8-13 attend this session.
July 31, 2004 Fire and Life Safety Educator Rip Copeland along with Lieutenant L Lee Garner, and Firefighter Jason Turner carried the fire safety trailer to the Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs “National Kids Day” celebration. They handed out 100 pieces of fire safety literature, and carried 35 kids through the trailer.
August 14, 2004 Fire and Life Safety Educator William Stewart carried the fire safety trailer to Sardis Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs “National Kids Day” celebration. He carried 144 children through the trailer.
October 04-08, 2004 We had 672 students from Batesville Elementary School come and visit our fire station this week. The pre-school and kindergarten classes were introduced to a firefighter in bunker gear. First graders were taught about smoke detectors, and their importance in the home.
October 13, 2004 Fire and Life Safety Educator Rip Copeland went to New Beginnings Daycare, and taught 17 pre-school students about Stop, Drop and Roll.
October 16, 2004 Fire and Life Safety Educator William Stewart along with Lt. Steve Beckham, Firefighters Daniel Cole and Brett Childs took the fire safety trailer, L-10 and “Pluggie” to a birthday party for Thomas Jenkins. Thomas’s parents bid on and won the “Fire Department” birthday for him at the charity ball. There were 16 children present.
October 21, 2004 Fire and Life Safety Educator, James Snyder went to North Panola Community Daycare. He taught a class of 30 3-4 year olds the value of Stop, Drop and Roll. He showed them a video by the same title, and demonstrated the skill. The children then showed how to properly do the skill.
October 27, 28 & 29, 2004 Firefighter Cowles Horton, Fire and Life Safety Team members James Snyder and Rip Copeland took the fire safety trailer to Pope Elementary School. We taught 240 children in grades K-3rd about the importance of smoke detectors.
November 9, 2004 Firefighter Jason Turner, Lt. L Lee Garner and Fire and Life Safety Educator Rip Copeland taught a fire extinguisher training class at Tri-Lakes Medical Center. 47 employees attended. December 4, 2004 Batesville Fire Department hosted the Mississippi Burn Camp Foundations annual Christmas Party. This party was for past campers from the camp, and prospective campers. There were 12 children and 10 counselors present. The guests were feed pizza, and enjoyed a visit from Santa Claus.
