2003 Fire and Life Safety Education

Visits

 

The Fire and Life Safety Team visited 3,838 people. 1,765 of these people took tours through the fire safety trailer.

 

January 17, 2003

 Head start brought 40 students to station 3 for a tour. The on shift fire fighters showed and explained the functions of the kitchen, dayroom, watch room truck bay and sleeping quarters. Each child was given fire safety materials to carry home and study.

February 11, 2003

Framed Pictures put all of their supervisors through fire extinguisher training. Lecture on fight or flight & PASS. Each student fought a trash fire with an ABC extinguisher. 25 employees.  Fire and Life Safety Educator Rip Copeland presented this class.

February 19, 2003

 Fire and Life Safety Educator William Stewart, firefighters Steve Beckham and Daniel Cole took a fire engine to Tiger Care. They showed the children our bunker gear and a fully donned fire fighter. Left fire safety material with them after a fire safety lecture. 14 students ages 3 & 4 years old.

 Magnolia Heights Academy brought 45 students & 6 teachers to station #3. They were shown how Ladder-10 is used at a fire, given a tour of the fire station, learned some fire safety tips from “Pluggie the Fireplug”. After the fire safety presentation they were

 March 28, 2003

Took Ladder-10 to Wonderland Daycare at 303 Tubbs Rd. Had a class of 30 pre-school age children, that we showed a video entitled Red the Firedog and the Three P’s of Fire Safety. Fire and Life Safety Educator reviewed fire safety tips with them from the video, introduced “Pluggie the Fireplug” to the class, handout educational materials and took them on a tour of Ladder-10. Chief Timothy Taylor and Fire and Life Safety Educator Rip Copeland presented the program.

April 3, 2003

Captain Steve Whitworth and Firefighters James Snyder and Chris Olson put on a fire safety presentation for 10 children at the library. They handed out educational materials and performed with “Pluggie the Fireplug”.

April 5, 2003

Fire and Life Safety Educators William Stewart and Rip Copeland along with Captain Steve Whitworth, Firefighters Chris Olson, Daniel Cole, Brett Childs and Lt. Steve Beckham manned a booth at the Junior Auxiliaries Health Fair at Tri-Lakes Medical Center. Captain Whitworth, Lt. Beckham and Firefighter Cole set up and conducted tours of the ladder truck. Fire and Life Safety Educators Stewart and Copeland with help from Firefighters Childs and Olson & “Pluggie” manned the inside booth. We handed out 150 pieces of fire safety educational material. Firefighter Childs also donned the Fire pup suit.

April 11, 2003

Firefighter William Stewart and Rip Copeland were invited to the I.C.S. Head start Center to read a book to the children. Firefighter Copeland and Fire pup (Firefighter Stewart) stopped at each class. We made contact with 250 students and 25 teachers.

May 16-17, 2003

Batesville Fire Department set up the fire and life safety trailer, for fire safety and severe weather training at spring fest.  The department handed out 381 pieces of educational material.  We had 65 people go through our fire and weather training program.

July 9, 2003

Batesville’s fire and life safety team took the fire safety trailer to the First United Methodist Church.  The first group we saw was 17 pre-schoolers.  They were shown the “Firefighters Are Our Friends” video.  We then went over some basic fire safety tips, and then Firefighter Brett Childs donned full bunker gear to show what an actual geared up firefighter looks like.  The second group we saw was 6 elementary school children.  With them we discussed smoke detectors, E.D.I.T.H., 911 & “Stop, Drop And Roll.  We then took two at a time to the trailer bedroom and smoked it up to let them practice in simulated fire conditions.  6 teachers and assistants also attended this training.  Firefighters helping were Capt. Steve Whitworth, William Stewart, Brett Childs, James Snyder and Rip Copeland.

July 12, 2003

Batesville’s Fire and Life Safety Team took the fire safety trailer to “Answered Prayer” at the National Guard Armory.  We took 26 children and adults through the trailer.  We went over smoke detectors, “Stay Low and Go”, E.D.I.T.H. and “Stop, Drop and Roll”.  Members participating were William Stewart, James Snyder and Rip Copeland.

July 14, 2003

Firefighters William Stewart and Rip Copeland took “Pluggie” to the Presbyterian Church on Eureka.  The Batesville Junior Auxiliary was having their “Summer Escape” program and asked us to do fire safety.  Firefighter Stewart worked “Pluggie” while Firefighter Copeland and “Pluggie” went over smoke detectors, E.D.I.T.H., “Crawl Low and GO”, 911, “Stop, Drop and Roll”, kitchen safety and matches and lighters are for grown ups.  We handed out “Pluggie” coloring books and colors to 13 students.  There were 8 teachers present.

July 24, 2003

Firefighter Rip Copeland presented two fire safety education programs at the library.  The first was to age group 0-5 years.  They were shown a video entitled “The Three P’s of Fire Safety”.  After the video he went over E.D.I.T.H. and Stop, Drop and Roll.  The next group was 6-12 years of age.  They were shown a video entitled “The Detector Protectors”.  After the video they were refreshed on smoke detector use and maintenance and E.D.I.T.H.  The two groups were handed out fire safety material and both groups totaled 250 children.

September 23, 2003

Firefighters James Snyder and William Stewart took the fire safety trailer to Hosanna Christian Academy in Pope.  There they taught K-3 grades fire safety, students in this group totaled 6. In 4-7 grades they taught 22, also present were 4 high school students and 7 adults.

October 1, 2003

Firefighters William Stewart, James Snyder and Rip Copeland took the fire safety trailer to Pope Elementary School.  They taught 52 pre-school-kindergarten students about the importance of firefighters.  They should a video entitled Our Friend the Firefighter.  After the presentation the children were given fire safety materials. There were 6 teachers present.  Also on this day they taught 65 first grade students about the dangers of smoke and stop, drop and roll.  These students were shown videos entitled Get Low and Go and Stop Drop and Roll.  These students were also given fire safety materials.  There were 7 teachers in this group.

October 2, 2003

Firefighters William Stewart, James Snyder and Rip Copeland returned to Pope school to teach the second and third grade students.  These students were instructed in E.D.I.T.H. and dial 911.  These students were given the opportunity to make a simulated e-911 call and to practice exiting a home in a smoke filled environment.  We instructed 108 students with 11 teachers in the group.

October 6-10

Fire Prevention Week

This week we had the Batesville Elementary School kindergarten through first grade come over to station 1.  Kindergarten classes were taught about fire fighters being community helpers.  They were shown a video entitled Firefighters are Our Friends, then one of the on duty fire fighters donned full bunker gear including S.C.B.A.  The first grade classes were taught about crawling low under smoke and stop, drop and roll.  They were shown two videos entitled Get Low and Go and Stop, Drop and Roll.  After this they were taken to the fire safety trailer and shown how to escape using simulated smoke.  On their way out the back door of the trailer they were given a chance to stop, drop and roll on gym mats.  On Thursday of this week we went to the second graders classrooms and spoke with them about E.D.I.T.H.  In all we spoke with 907 students this week.

October 7, 2003

Firefighters Cowles Horton and Rip Copeland took engine 7 to the boys and girls club.  There we spoke with 60 students about a fire fighters job and the tools we work with, we also did some basic fire safety training.  We went over stop, drop and roll; crawl low under smoke, matches and lighters are tools for grown ups.

Fire and Life Safety Educator William Stewart along with Lt. Steve Beckham and Firefighters Daniel Cole and Brett Childs took engine 8 to the First Baptist Church daycare and spoke to 12 preschool children.  They showed them a firefighters bunker gear, tools on E-8 and went over stop, drop and roll.

October 14, 2003

Fire and Life Safety Educator Rip Copeland conducted a fire extinguisher training class for 174 employees of the MS Department of Health; this was done as part of their required continuing education.

October 14-16, 2003

Batesville Fire Departments, Fire & Life Safety Team (William Stewart, James Snyder and Rip Copeland) carried the fire safety trailer to Greenhill Elementary School in Sardis.  On these three days they taught kindergarten-third grades.  The children were instructed in several different areas such as Firefighters Are Our Friends; Stop, Drop and Roll; Crawl Low under Smoke; Exit Drills in the Home & E-911.  A total of 336 children were taught these days.

October 17, 2003

Firefighters L Lee Garner, Jason Turner and Rip Copeland took engine 8 to Dewberry Daycare; there they talked to 30 pre-school students.  The children were shown a video entitled Our Friend the Firefighters.  Firefighter Turner donned full bunker gear for the children as firefighter Copeland explained each piece to them; they were then shown some of the tools we work with off of engine 8.

October 20, 2003

Firefighters Steve Beckham, Daniel Cole, Cowles Horton and Rip Copeland went to New Beginning Daycare, and did a fire safety presentation for 18 preschoolers.  We went over basic fire safety, such as Know Two Ways Out, Crawl Low Under Smoke and Stop, Drop and Roll.  Firefighter Cole donned full bunker gear for the students.

October 20 & 21, 2003

The Batesville Fire Department, Fire & Life Safety Education Team (William Stewart, James Snyder and Rip Copeland) took the fire safety trailer to Como Elementary School.  There they taught kindergarten through grade 3, fire safety education.  The children were instructed on Firefighters Are Our Friends; Stop, Drop & Roll; Crawl Low Under Smoke; Exit Drills in The Home; Dial 911 & other fire safety messages.  215 students were reached these two days.

October 22,2003

Firefighters Steve Beckham, Daniel Cole, Cowles Horton & FLS team member William Stewart took ladder-10 to Little Playmates Daycare. There they taught these students that Firefighters Are Our Friends. They were shown a video entitled The Friendly Firefighter, shown a firefighter in full bunker gear and given a tour of the truck.  35 students were reached this day.

October 23 & 24, 2003

The Batesville Fire Department, Fire & Life Safety Education Team (William Stewart and James Snyder), took the fire safety trailer to North Delta School. Also helping were firefighters Steve Whitworth, Steve Beckham, Daniel Cole and Brett Childs.  There they taught kindergarten through grade 3, fire safety education.  These children were instructed on Firefighters Are Our Friends: Stop, Drop & Roll: Crawl Low Under Smoke: Exit Drills in The Home: Dial911 & other fire safety messages. 215 students were reached these two days.

October 25, 2003

Firefighter Steve Whitworth, along with Fire and Life Safety Team members James Snyder and Rip Copeland, carried the fire safety trailer to Tunica County for North Tunica Fire Departments open house.  The trailer was set up at the outlet mall.  There were 30 students given demonstrations.

October 28, 2003

Fire and Life Safety team member Rip Copeland taught 40 students at the First United Methodist Church Daycare.  They were shown a video entitled Stop, Drop & Roll, taught that firefighters are their friends, and given a tour of ladder-10.  Firefighters L Lee Garner and Billy Broome helped with this class.

October 27, 29 & 30

The Batesville Fire Department, Fire and Life Safety Team carried the fire safety trailer to Batesville Intermediate School.  They went over all fire safety that these students have been introduced to since kindergarten.  After a short review the students were grouped in families of four and asked to show us the proper procedures of escape from a house fire.  We spoke with 328 students over this three-day period.  Including team members William Stewart, James Snyder, Steve Whitworth and Rip Copeland. Billy Whitworth, Steve Beckham, Daniel Cole also helped.

October 31, 2003

Firefighters William Stewart and Steve Beckham took engine 7 to Jesus Loves Me Daycare.  They spoke with 50 pre-school students about firefighters being community helpers.  They were shown a video entitled Firefighters Are Our Friends and given a tour of E-7.

November 3, 2003

Fire and Life Safety Educator James Snyder went to the Batesville Development Center, and spoke with 20 children about fire safety.  They were shown a video entitled Stop, Drop and Roll.  They were also shown a firefighter in full bunker gear.

Firefighters L Lee Garner, Billy Broome and Rip Copeland visited the First Baptist Church Daycare.  They talked with 25 pre-school students about stop, drop and roll.

Firefighter Rip Copeland conducted a fire extinguisher training class at Batesville Casket.  There were 15 employees present.

November 6, 2003

Firefighters L Lee Garner, William Johnson and Rip Copeland took Ladder-10 to the Batesville Library.  They did a short fire safety program for 38 preschool children.  The children were shown equipment firefighters work with and taken on a tour of L-10.

December 12, 2003

Fire and Life Safety Educator Rip Copeland presented a fire safety program for 17 nurses at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.  They were shown a video entitled Practice for Life: Fire Evacuation for Senior Citizens and the Disabled.  We went over evacuation procedures for the hospital, RACE acronym, smoke detectors in the home and Christmas fire safety.  Handouts included Protecting Your Family From Fire and holiday safety tags.
